"STRAIGHT SOUTHERN ROCK" TOUR, UK, 1976
In 1976, Capricorn Records sent Bonnie over to Europe on a "Straight Southern Rock" tour with label mates Grinderswitch and The Marshall Tucker Band. The tour included four dates in the UK. Grinderswitch would kick things off with a couple of sets, first on their own and then as Bonnie's backing band, before The Marshall Tucker Band rounded out the evening.
November 27 - Odeon Hammersmith, London
November 29 - Odeon, Birmingham
December 1 - The Apollo, Glasgow
December 2 - Palace Theatre, Manchester |

Registration is worth it for this show alone but once there, you'll find a treasure trove of other gems, including early and late sets by Bonnie at The Bottom Line, New York on May 1, 1978.

Bonnie's five song set was:
* Hold On, I'm Coming
* Two Steps From The Blues
* Atlanta, Georgia
* Groupie (Superstar)
* Higher And Higher
One track from each of the three acts was released on the 2LP set, "Hotels, Motels And Road Shows", including Bonnie's rendition of "Groupie (Superstar)". The album cover (opposite) indicates that this was from Glasgow but we're not sure, as the cover gets it wrong for the Grinderswitch track (actually from Glasgow) and the MTB track (actually from London) - as can be heard from the MC's welcoming announcements.
At least four of the MTB songs from the Birmingham show were broadcast on the King Biscuit Flour Hour radio show. Then in 2003, four songs from Manchester and four from London were included on MTB's live CD, "Stompin' Room Only". Better late than never! |
